Emiliano Zapata was born on August 8, 1879, in Morelos (Mexico). His parents were Gabriel Zapata and Cleofas Salazar.
In his childhood and youth was farmer and mule driver. In his village he always defended the peasants who suffered abuses of the landowners.
The March 11, 1911, revolted against the dictatorship of Porfirio Diaz, Francisco Madero support. May 25 launched the "Plan de Ayala" where he demanded distribute farms to peasants. At that time he became known as "El Caudillo of the South". In 1914, he allied to Pancho Villa and took Mexico City. But the forces of Venustiano Carranza was forced to return to Morelos, where he installed an agrarian government.
He remained rebellious until Carranza's men ambushed in the Chinameca farm. Here he was shot dead on April 10, 1919.
